AGENDA Do Now Demo of Newton’s 1st laws of motion PowerPoint and notes of Newton’s 1st and 2nd Laws of motion. Practice calculating force and acceleration.

In the early 1600’s, Galileo suggested that once an object is in motion, no force is needed to keep it moving. This idea led Isaac Newton in the late 1600’s to propose his three basic laws about motion.

Newton’s 1st Law of Motion An object at rest will remain at rest and an object moving at a constant velocity will continue moving at a constant velocity, unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Remember when we learned about inertia? Newton’s 1st law is also called the “Law of Inertia” What do you think affects the AMOUNT of inertia?

Inertia-resisting a change in motion. Inertia depends on mass. More mass more inertia  greater force required to change its motion.

Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion Force= Mass x Acceleration Acceleration depends on the object’s mass net force acting on the object.
