Ser & Estar
Both ser and estar mean “to be.” Ser & estar
Ser Ser is used to explain long- lasting characteristics. Example: Soy una muchacha. (I am a girl.)
Estar Estar is used to describe a temporary state or condition. Example: Estoy enfermo. (I am sick.)
Estar Estar is used to describe ALL location (even if the location is permanent) with ONE exception. Example: Walls está en Mississippi.
Location Exception Estar is used to describe all location of people or things, except for official event locations. Rule of thumb: If it is an event that could go on an invitation, use “ser” instead of “estar.” Example: La boda es en la iglesia hoy a las dos.
Use Ser when talking about: origin: Where something/someone is from long-term characteristics height official event location name personality hair & eye color Time
Use estar when talking about: Where something is located (permanently & temporarily) Where someone is located (permanently & temporarily) temporary conditions sickness mood temporary emotions
Ser yo soy nosotros somos tú eres él/ella/Ud. es ellos/ellas/Uds. son
estar yo estoy nosotros estamos tú estás él/ella/Ud. está ellos/ellas/Uds. están
