End-Product Description Globey's World Abstract Design Requirements Design objectives A better assessment of the type of data needed by users A better assessment of the type of interface and platform needed by users The best way to implement the world map in regard to data size Advantages of using a database over hard-coding the data Interesting information given by Globey Ability to upgrade easily Functional Requirements Give information about the various countries of the world An interactive world map will be provided Use multimedia to make the program more interesting and entertaining to the user Allow comparisons between countries’ information Design constraints Due to the nature of the project, design constraints will be determined at a later period in time. The investigations that are conducted will determine the best design possible for Globey’s World. This design will then allow a definition of the design constraints. Measurable milestones Develop a project plan Meet with teachers and visit classrooms Implement program Test program The general population of the United States is not very familiar with the diverse nature of different countries throughout the world. Unfortunately, encyclopedias and other reference books can be hard to access and burdensome to handle while trying to gather this type of information. In order to promote more interest in nations outside the U.S. during the 3rd through 6th grades, a simple software program is in development to present an easier way for these students to learn more about the many nations of the world. An investigation will be conducted to determine the most efficient way of implementing Globey’s World as a fully functional software package. Introduction General background A prototype of Globey’s World was developed in the spring of 2001 in Computer Engineering 320 and contains three main pages (See below) Technical problem There are many areas of Globey’s World that need to be investigated in order for it to more effectively attain its intended purpose in an efficient manner Operating environment PC or Macintosh interfaces Intended user(s) and use(s) Children in grades 3-6 seeking information about the countries of the world World Page Country Page Comparison Page Assumptions End-Product Description Users will have access to appropriate computer resources The prototype is as documented by the previous team Users will have basic computing knowledge All team members will actively participate in the project, including learning new programming languages if necessary Further limitations will be developed pending the results of the investigations of the technical problems The current team will be able to gather relevant data from their investigations Data within the program is of public domain (not copyrighted) The end product for this project will consist of a complete program that incorporates multimedia into a fun and interesting software package that teaches 3rd – 6th grade students about the countries of the world. The program will allow students to access a variety of geographic information and will help begin the students’ adventure into learning more about the world they live in. Technical Approach Through interaction with the client-base, determinations will be made as the project develops on such issues as: Target Platform – Mac,PC, or web-based Use of database vs. hard-coding Globey’s interaction within the program Limitations Testing Approach   Software and hardware available to Ames Community School District Group’s programming knowledge as it applies to programming languages that may be required for the development of the software The software will be tested for functionality, reliability, efficiency and ease of use. Group members will initially test the software. People outside the group will conduct further testing. Finally the software will be evaluated and tested by potential users in the target 3rd through 6th grade age group.
