ELA COMMON CORE STANDARDS:

In this WebQuest, you will explore the characters and themes in Wonder In this WebQuest, you will explore the characters and themes in Wonder. You'll also get to know the author and learn more about creation of the book. INTRODUCTION: I can deepen my understanding of the characters and themes of Wonder and explore another important issue by completing a webquest and by creating a PSA

You will complete a number of tasks to better understand the characters and themes in the novel before ultimately creating a Public Service Announcement that shares a lesson you learned from the novel. TASKS:

Complete the tasks in order Complete the tasks in order. Be sure to follow directions for each task and complete all assignments associated with the task BEFORE moving on to the next. Complete the questions on the Explore the World of Wonder packet as you engage in each task. INSTRUCTIONS:

Task 1 Purpose: During this task, you will learn more about the author of Wonder, R.J. Palacio. Begin with Step 1 below. Remember to read the complete step directions before clicking on any links or videos.   GET TO KNOW AUTHOR, R.J. PALACIO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUJtGHhy41Q

Complete the following three steps in order Complete the following three steps in order. Take your time to read the instructions before clicking on any links or playing videos. Remember to respond to the questions or prompts in your Explore the World of Wonder packet as well.   TASKS:

TASKS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUJtGHhy41Q Step 1: Make sure your headphones are plugged in all the way. Did you check? Ok, click play on the video ABOVE and watch it from start to finish. When meeting with schools, Palacio says that she always starts by asking, "How would you react if you met someone who looked like Auggie?" Take a moment to think about your answer to this question. How DO you think you'd react if you met someone like Auggie unexpectedly? Take a moment to think about this before moving on to Step 2. Respond to the Step 1 prompt in the Explore the World of Wonderpacket.     TASKS:

READ THE AN ARTICLE ABOUT WONDER & INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR AT THE FOLLOWING LINK: http://wonderwebquest.weebly.com/rj- palacio-interview.html TASKS:

Step 3: R.J. Palacio has a website that she uses to post about her life as a writer. In this task, you will read one of her blog posts that shares a comment from a fan along with her response to the commenter. Read the note and R.J. Palacio's response. After, read and respond to the following question: R.J Palacio says, "My hope is that [Wonder] helps children who look like your son, too, to have a better understanding and more empathy for children like your son." Do you think Wonder will help children be better understanding and empathetic like R.J. Palacio hoped? Why or why not? Record your response in your packet. TASKS:

LEARNING ABOUT FACIAL DIFFERENCES: Auggie was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school, until the 5th grade when he enters Beecher Prep. While Auggie is an ordinary kid, he has an extraodinary face. In the novel, we see how people treat Auggie, how they make him feel with their reactions, and how many find it hard to look past his face and get to know the real, ordinary Auggie. Really, he is just like any kid. On the inside, we're all the same.  LEARNING ABOUT FACIAL DIFFERENCES:

Task 2 Purpose: There are three steps to this task Task 2 Purpose: There are three steps to this task. You will learn about facial differences, choose two syndromes to research, and explore R.J. Palacio's effect on raising craniofacial awareness through this book. Complete the following three steps in order. Take your time to read the instructions before clicking on any links or playing videos. Remember to respond to questions in your Explore the World of Wonder packet as well. TASKS:

Step 1: R.J. Palacio calls 10-year-old Nathanial Newman her real-life Auggie. Get to know Nathanial and read his letter to his classmates. Go here to start. http://wonderwebquest.weebl y.com/letter-from-nathanial.html TASKS:

Step 2: Check those headphones again Step 2: Check those headphones again. Then, click PLAY on the video and watch it from start to finish. https://vimeo.com/49959214 What message does this video send? Tasks:

You can choose to research any of the syndromes listed (some syndromes choices to research are circled in red below).Only research two. If you're interested in researching more, may do so at another time. https://www.ccakids.com/syndromes.html TASKS:

TASKS: THEMES IN WONDER Task 3 Purpose: During this task, you will review the topic of themes before exploring themes and lessons in Wonder. TASKS: THEMES IN WONDER

REVIEW: WHAT IS A THEME?

THEMES REVIEW:

THEMES REVIEW:

HOW CAN I DETERMINE A THEME IN A STORY?

Quotes from Wonder: “Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.” “If every person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary – the world really would be a better place." “Now that I look back, I don’t know why I was so stressed about it all this time. Funny how sometimes you worry a lot about something and it turns out to be nothing.” WHEN GIVEN THE CHOICE BETWEEN BEING RIGHT OR BEING KIND, CHOOSE KIND. QUOTES THAT CONNECT TO THEME: CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE AND DEFEND YOUR CHOICE:

Step 3: Kindness is the main theme in Wonder Step 3: Kindness is the main theme in Wonder. It helps us realize that a small, simple act of kindness can make a big difference, and we have the ability to CHOOSE KIND. Decide whether you would like to join the national movement and pledge to CHOOSE KIND. If you'd like to, click below to sign the pledge. http://www.randomhouse.com/kids/choose-kind/pledge.php

MORE QUOTES FROM WONDER: “The things we do outlast our mortality. The things we do are like monuments that people build to honor heroes after they've died. They're like the pyramids that the Egyptians built to honor the pharaohs. Only instead of being made of stone, they're made out of the memories people have of you.” “The best way to measure how much you've grown isn't by inches or the number of laps you can now run around the track, or even your grade point average-- though those things are important, to be sure. It's what you've done with your time, how you've chosen to spend your days, and whom you've touched this year. That, to me, is the greatest measure of success.”  “It’s not enough to be friendly. You have to be a friend.”  “We carry with us, as human beings, not just the capacity to be kind, but the very choice of kindness.”  “The most important precept is to be aware of WHO WE ARE! “Who we are,” he said, underlining each word as he said it. “Who we are! Us! Right? What kind of people are we? What kind of person are you? Isn’t that the most important thing of all? Isn’t that the kind of question we should be asking ourselves all the time? “What kind of person am I? Learning who you are is what you are here to do. QUOTES THAT CONNECT TO THEME: CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE AND DEFEND YOUR CHOICE:

MORE QUOTES FROM WONDER: “Are you really going to let a couple of stupid kids keep you from going back to school? I know you've been enjoying it. Don't give them that power over you. Don't give them the satisfaction.” “Jack, sometimes you don't have to be mean to hurt someone. You understand?”  “But I really believe, and Daddy really believes, that there are more good people on this earth than bad people, and the good people watch out for each other and take care of each other.” QUOTES THAT CONNECT TO THEME: CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE AND DEFEND YOUR CHOICE:

FINAL CHALLENGE: CREATE A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Final Challenge: Consider everything you've learned from Wonder. Think about a lesson learned from the novel that you'd like to share with others. In your final challenge, you will plan and film a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to share with your peers. What is a PSA? A PSA is a message shared with the public with the purpose to raise awareness and/or change the public attitudes and behaviors towards an issue. FINAL CHALLENGE: CREATE A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

FINAL CHALLENGE: CREATE A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Watch the following PSA examples to better understand their purpose and structure. Ask yourself, "What message is it sending?" You'll notice that each PSA is different, but they have one thing in common - they're all sharing a clear message. In a PSA, there should be a clear message (what you want people to know) and a call to action (what you want people to do). FINAL CHALLENGE: CREATE A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

PSA EXAMPLE ONE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RUY kzJio24 PSA EXAMPLE NUMBER TWO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS-t78Z1exQ CREATE A PSA:

EXPLORE THE WORLD OF WONDER You're ready to plan your own PSA. Continue using the Explore the World of Wonder handout to get started.  EXPLORE THE WORLD OF WONDER

Did I carefully answer each question in My World of Wonder packet? When exploring theme, did I provide at least two examples of evidence and add my own thinking? Did I carefully plan my PSA and make sure it includes a theme, call to action and script? Is my presentation neat, complete, thorough, thoughtful and reflect deep understanding of the story and the issues it raises? WONDER CHECKLIST:
