Background Info The drafting year of the The Endangered Species Act was 1973 The Amendment Years are 1973,1982,1985,1988 The act was International legislation that aimed to conserve endangered species as well as their habitats.

The purpose of the ESA is to protect and recover imperiled species and the ecosystems. Function The FWS has primary responsibility for terrestrial and freshwater organisms, while the responsibilities of NMFS are mainly marine wildlife such as whales and fish such as salmon. Under the ESA, species may be listed as either endangered or threatened. It also provides authority to acquire land for the Conservation of listed species, using land and water conservation funds.

Enforcers The lead federal agencies for implementing ESA are the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Service. The FWS maintains a worldwide list of endangered species. Species include birds, insects, fish, reptiles, mammals, crustaceans, flowers, grasses, and trees.
