HETEROGENEOUS AQUEOUS SYSTEMS Chapter OBJECTIVE I will be able to distinguish between suspensions, solutions, and colloids.
There are no strict boundaries on the size of colloidal particles, but they tend to vary between 10-9 m to 10-6 m in size.
Chapter 17 Section 4 heterogeneous mixture- not uniform in composition, can pick out individual pieces Types of Heterogeneous Mixtures 1)suspension -mixture.
Can you name an example of a colloid? Colloids are mixtures with particles intermediate in size between solutions and suspensions (particle size 1 nm.

Warm-Up In your own words, define the word mixture.
A solution is a homogenous mixture of 2 or more substances. The solute is(are) the substance(s) present in the smaller amount(s). The solvent is the substance.

Suspensions and Colloids

Colloids and suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures

Suspensions and Colloids Suspensions and colloids are NOT solutions. Suspensions: The particles are so large that they settle out of the solvent if not constantly stirred. Colloids: The particle is intermediate in size between those of a suspension and those of a solution.

Types of Colloids Examples Dispersing Medium Dispersed Substance Colloid Type Fog, aerosol sprays Gas Liquid Aerosol Smoke, airborne bacteria Solid Whipped cream, soap suds Foam Milk, mayonnaise Emulsion Paint, clays, gelatin Sol Marshmallow, Styrofoam Solid foam Butter, cheese Solid emulsion Ruby glass Solid sol

The Tyndall Effect Colloids scatter light, making a beam visible. Solutions do not scatter light. Which glass contains a colloid? colloid solution
