Presentation transcript:

Why study man’s impact on the environment? With your partner list 5 reasons why you might need to know “Man’s impact on the environment.

83% of world’s land surface under human influence This map shows the global impact of the human footprint. 83% of the Earth is now being used by humans in some capacity, due mostly to population growth compounded with increasing consumption of resources.

An in-depth look at natural resources and man’s impact on these resources will be the focus of the next few days.

Types of Natural Resources Renewable Nonrenewable Inexhaustible Natural Resources are parts of the Earth’s environment that supply materials useful or necessary for the survival of living organisms. Types of Natural Resources Renewable Nonrenewable Inexhaustible

Renewable Resource A renewable resource is any natural resource that is recycled or replaced constantly by nature. Plants Clean water Soil

Nonrenewable Coal Oil Natural gas Minerals

Coal One of the world’s major sources of energy. In the United States, coal provides approximately 23% of all the energy consumed. Coal is used to produce more than half of all the electrical energy that is generated and used in the United States.

Inexhaustible Resources Sun Geothermal Wind Water

Why is water considered a renewable and an inexhaustible resource? With your partner decide why water is listed in both categories.
