Transcendentalism Nonconformity Self-Reliance Against organized religion & Political Parties Self-Reliance Transcendentalism The goodness of man and nature Nonconformity

Transcendentalism Began in New England in the 1830s. Major transcendentalist thinkers: Ralph Waldo Emerson Henry David Thoreau Margaret Fuller Walt Whitman

An American Writing Movement Many thought European literature was superior to American literature. Transcendentalists had no interest in imitating European authors, and set out to create their own style. “The United States themselves are essentially the greatest poem.” - Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass

Self-Reliance Follow your own instincts and ideas! “Listen to the inward voice and bravely obey that. Do the things at which you are great, not what you were never made for. To be great is to be misunderstood.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self- Reliance

Nonconformity In many ways, transcendentalism was a reaction to the pressures of society. Transcendentalists were skeptical of the educational and religious structures that were the norm in America. “Imitation is suicide.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson “Beware of all enterprises that require a new set of clothes.” – Henry David Thoreau

Goodness of Man & Nature Transcendentalists viewed humans and nature as inherently good, rather than corrupt, sinful, or uncivilized.

Free Thought Transcendentalists viewed organised religion and political parties were harmful to your thoughts. Free thought - thinking that is unrestrained by any authority especially in religion.

Confidence "I CELEBRATE myself, and sing myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you." -Excerpt from Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself"
