Catalyst (10 minutes):

Universe The universe is all of space and everything in it. How many galaxies are in the universe? BILLIONS!

Galaxy A giant structure that contains billions of stars. We live in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Types of Galaxies How are the below galaxies similar? These are called spiral galaxies.

Types of Galaxies How are the below galaxies similar? These are called elliptical galaxies. There is not a lot of gas and dust between stars in elliptical galaxies.

Irregular galaxies Irregular galaxies do not have regular shapes

The Milky Way Galaxy We live in the Milky Way galaxy, a spiral galaxy. The solar system is located in an outer arm of the Milky Way Galaxy!

Solar System The solar system is the sun, 8 planets, their moons, comets, asteroids, and meteoroids all held together by gravity—causing everything to revolve around the sun (heliocentric!!)

Got it?! What is smallest: solar system, galaxy, universe? How many stars are in a galaxy?
