Think About This… What is your favorite recipe? Can you describe the steps it would take to make it? How do you make macaroni and cheese on the stove? Do you boil the cheese, drain the water, and then put in the hard noodles?

Just like making a recipe, good writers have steps they take in order to write effectively. Good writers use the steps of the writing process to publish a top-quality piece of writing. Can you identify the steps of the writing process?

Prewriting Rough Draft Revise Edit Final Draft & Publish

Step #1 of the Writing Process Brainstorm ideas Pick a topic Think about what already know (background knowledge) Create a graphic organizer to get your thoughts down

Graphic Organizers: Eventually, you will be able to select the graphic organizer you find most useful for the type of writing you are asked to produce.

Step #2 of the Writing Process Begin to write your story Include a beginning, middle, and ending Write complete sentences and thoughts down on paper in paragraph form Not worried about conventions at this time

Step #3 of the Writing Process Reread it to see if makes sense Are ideas in the correct order? Are clear details present? Is there a beginning, middle and end? Are there transitional words to help the writing flow smoothly?

Step #4 of the Writing Process Look for errors in Grammar Look for errors in punctuation, capitalization, and Spelling Make sure paragraphs are indented © 2012 Wise Guys

Step #5 of the Writing Process Write your final draft! Your best effort! Neatness counts! Maybe can include a possible illustration Share with someone!!
