PEDIGREES

Pedigrees A pedigree chart is a diagram that shows family inheritance of a particular trait.

Male versus Female Males are Square (just kidding ;) Represented by squares Females are represented by circles

First comes love, then comes Marriage… A horizontal line connecting a male and female represents a marriage

Kiddies A vertical line and bracket connect the parents to their children One child multiple children

Shady characters A shaded square or circle indicates a person that possesses that trait A square or circle that is not shaded indicated the person does not have the trait being studied

Labeling In order to read a Pedigree, two numbering rules apply Generation- which is shown with Roman Numerals Individuals- which is shown with a number These numbers can be used to identify individuals on the pedigree. For Example, look at the pedigree and pick out: II-5

TRY IT Dave had 3 children with Martha. Sarah is 5, Doris is 3 and Daniel is 2. Martha, Doris and Daniel have blue eyes Make the pedigree for blue eyes Check your answer on the next slide
