What Are Maps?

What is a map? A map is a drawing of the earth’s surface or part of it.

How are maps useful? Maps help us to understand places better by giving us information about them.

The following items should be found on every map:

Title The title tells us what part of the earth we are examining. It also tells us the purpose for the map. For example the title of this map suggests that the individual will be studying the adventures of explorers over time.

Scale: Maps have scales to enable us to determine actual distances between points.

Compass rose ( or north pointing arrow) Once we know where north is on the map, we can determine all the other directions. This enables us to calculate the direction we need to travel to get from one place to another.

Symbols Symbols are used on maps to represent real features found on the earth’s surface. They save space and are easy to understand.

Legend ( or Key) A legend or key is necessary to explain any symbols used on a map. It is placed in a box to separate it from the rest of the map.

Your turn! Explain two ways you have actually used a map and for what purpose.
