The Science Test.  Energy can be defined as the ability to do work.  Because of the direct connection between energy and work, energy is measured.
Forms and Types of Energy Energy: The property of an object that allows it to produce change in the environment or in itself. (The ABILITY to do WORK)
Forms of Energy. Nature of Energy Energy is the ability to do work. If an object or organism does work, then it uses energy. Work is the use of a force.

Energy Forms, Types, & Transformations Vocabulary

energy Ability to do work Measured in joules

Work Exerting a force over distance to move an object.

Dependent on position & condition of an object. Potential energy Stored energy Dependent on position & condition of an object.

Kinetic energy Energy of motion

Mechanical energy When work is done to an object, it acquires energy. Mechanical energy is defined as the energy of motion. Ex: throw a ball or kick a ball

Radiant energy is energy that travels by waves or particles, electromagnetic radiation such as x- rays.

Sound energy Sound is the energy made when objects/mediums vibrate. Sound is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate — the energy is transferred through the substance in a wave.

Chemical energy Chemical bonds are required to bond atoms of food or fuel (chemical compounds) together; when bonds are broken, energy is released. Ex: fuel and food

Electrical energy Is the energy of electrical particles in motion. Power lines carry into homes in electromagnetic form Ex: powerlines

Nuclear energy Is the energy coming from the nucleus of an atom. Fusing together or separating the nucleus of an atom. When the nucleus of an atom splits (fission), nuclear energy is released in the form of heat energy and light energy. Nuclear energy is also released when nuclei collide at high speeds and join (fuse). Most concentrated form of energy.

Thermal energy The internal motion of atoms because moving particles produce heat. Heat energy can be produced by friction. Heat energy causes changes in Temperature and phase in matter.

Solar energy Energy emitted by sun Plants use for food

Energy transformation/transfer Change from one form of energy to another form

circuit closed path through which an electric current flows or may flow
