The concepts of dependability and availability performance Reliability Maintainability Maintenance support performance Dependability Characteristics of a product Characteristics of the logistics and maintenance support organization Adopted from IEC 60300-1

Lifecycle of a technical system End-of-life management Concept and definition Design and development Manufacturing Operation and maintenance Installation and commissioning Modified from Ulrich and Eppinger 2004

Guidelines proposed for ABC dependability management (1/2) Specification, evaluation and allocation of dependability objectives based on end-user engagement providing a ground for the other reliability, availability and maintenance (RAM) tasks System dependability objectives Adoption of a deductive top-down approach for analysing the reliability structure of the whole system Planning and allocation of resources, reliability improvements and maintenance efforts to the most critical parts of the system System reliability structure Implementation of failure analysis studies for the different phases of the project starting already as a concept phase reliability risk analysis System and component failure behavior

Guidelines proposed for ABC dependability management (2/2) Implementation of an iterative maintainability study for early versions of the system design Maintainability performance Systematic gathering of reliability-related data Collaboration between maintenance function and design function in order to form a shared understanding on data items relevant and essential for system design Reliability-related data Supporting system design with analysis of dependability characteristics of the previous or similar systems Cross-sectional collaboration within organization Exploitation of reliability-related data

Conclusions As the scope of deployments expands, the operational reliability of ABC systems will have a much higher weight in determining the fluency of overall border clearance processes at airport in Europe and elsewhere Dependability management offers a framework for system developers to comprehensively analyze and manage the development backgrounds and dependability characteristics of individual components provided by multiple sub-contractors In order to form a strongly structured yet an integrated entity in the whole ABC development process, continuous and solid collaboration between various stakeholders during the system’s complete lifecycle is required Systematic dependability management throughout the system’s lifecycle facilitates ABC to meet its intended benefits: Cost-effective operation for both system suppliers, maintenance suppliers, and most importantly, system owners
