Presentation transcript:

Chapter 20: The Politics of the Roaring Twenties Analyze the policy of ‘normalcy’ after WWI.

First American president elected with the full participation of women voters. (1920) 19th Amendment: Gave women the right to vote.

Americans voted for Harding because they wanted change. Harding promised a “return to normalcy” Interpreted as a return to a life that was simpler- a life before war, and before the endless campaigns for social and moral reform.

Domestic Policy Warren Harding took office promising to undo many of the progressive policies of Woodrow Wilson's administration.

Many of Harding’s cabinet members became involved in political deals and scandals.

Through it all, Harding remained popular with the American people. They had voted for a hands-off president, and Harding played the role perfectly.

What was Harding’s greatest strength and greatest weakness as President in returning the nation to ‘normalcy’? Use examples from the reading or videos to prove your response. Washington Naval Conference FM Tariff Dawes Plan Quota Act Teapot Dome Scandal

The Washington Disarmament Conference of 1921 Foreign Affairs The Washington Disarmament Conference of 1921 succeeded in reducing the navies of the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and Italy came at the insistence of the Senate
