USC Center for Excellence in Research “Strategizing Survival in the Current Research Funding Climate” Health Sciences Campus University of Southern California

The Message: Things Have Changed Wow factor! Impact is most important; Mega-studies; focus on the science above all; hypothesis still important! Team approach! Co-investigators well chosen Multiple grants to one PI now difficult. R01s are not the answer, get on a team! Program project grants Interdisciplinary projects! But be an expert in something Keep reinventing yourself! Add new disciplines to your repertoire NIH funds research on human health! Disease research; include clinicians. Diversify! not just NIH; Look at RFAs; increase your lab funding by training awards; use the K99. Balance two grants to maintain continuous funding; SBIR/STTR Market yourself! Talk to your program director, talk to your colleagues; be visible nationally
