NetherLight Walter van Dijk TF-MSP meeting, Copenhagen, 15 September 2009
Agenda Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF) Function of GOLE’s NetherLight Service-definition Organization Future developments External connectivity SURFnet IP-layer (role AMS-IX) Optical layer (role NetherLight) SURFnet, we make innovation work
Linking the World with Light GLIF Vision Linking the World with Light Optical networks are the central architectural element in support of this decade’s most demanding e-science applications Hybrid networks are the next-generation networks with dedicated lightpaths for guaranteed high-speed few-to- few usage Research: Does not have any geographical boundaries Needs an interoperable and inclusive approach Needs world-wide collaboration and coordination GLIF, Linking the World with Light 2
GLIF GLIF is about collaboration, sharing of knowledge, expertise and resources GLIF is not a network/provider nor a standards body GLIF has 49 participants that meet twice a year GLIF resources GLIF Open Lambda Exchanges (GOLE’s) Lambdas GOLE: Neutral and Open Exchange Point Where lambdas connect to Where lightpaths get cross-connected GLIF, Linking the World with Light 3
Linking the World with Light GLIF, Linking the World with Light
Service-definition NetherLight (1) NetherLight provides: - long-distance Gigabit Ethernet tunnels - carved out of international lambda circuits - to and from destinations as diverse as Chicago, Geneva, Amsterdam, New York, London, Stockholm and Prague today, - with many more to come as the lambda grid expands. SURFnet, we make innovation work
Service-definition NetherLight (2) Operational since January 2002 Open optical infrastructure: SONET/SDH cross-connect (Nortel HDXc) that interconnects lambdas & lightpaths Gigabit Ethernet switching facility Interface types: - STM-64 - 10 Gigabit Ethernet - 1 Gigabit Ethernet SURFnet, we make innovation work
Organization NetherLight: realized & managed by SURFnet Infrastructure: located at SARA Amsterdam Operations: subcontracted Active monitoring: 24/7/365 Account management: available since 2009 SURFnet, we make innovation work
Future developments Professionalizing operations: - strengthen customer support function - operational excellence - tariffs (cost-recovery) Dynamic GOLE: - dynamic lightpath services since 2008 - however: currently single domain ;-( - work in progress within GLIF & others SURFnet, we make innovation work
External connectivity (IP-layer) SURFnet, we make innovation work
External connectivity (Optical layer) What is the NetherLight GOLE? Mention VLANs Mention probably DRAC SURFnet. We make innovation work
