THE LORD’S SUPPER 1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-32

1 COR. 11:23-32 THERE ARE 2 ORDINANCES GIVEN BY JESUS THAT ARE TO BE OBSERVED BY ALL TRUE CHRISTIAN CHURCHES. 1. BAPTISM 2. THE LORD’S SUPPER

QUESTIONS THAT HAD BEEN ASKED 1 COR. 7:1—”NOW FOR THE MATTERS YOU WROTE ABOUT…” 8:1---”NOW ABOUT…” 11:3---”NOW …” 11:17---”I HEAR…” 12:1---”NOW ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS…” 16:1---”NOW ABOUT THE COLLECTION…”

6 QUESTIONS PAUL SEEMS TO BE ANSWERING 6 QUESTIONS THAT WERE ASKED BY THE CORINTHIANS.

1. WHAT? 1. THE LORD’S SUPPER (1 Cor. 11:20, only here). 2. Communion (1 Cor. 10:16, only place in the Bible). 3. Breaking of bread (Acts 2:42 and throughout Acts). 4. Eucharist (from the Greek word in 1 Cor. 11:24—”He had given thanks”---eucharistasas).

2. WHY? Commanded--- “Do this…” PAST--- “Do this in remembrance of Me.” (1 Cor. 11:24-25). PRESENT--- “You proclaim the Lord’s death...” FUTURE--- “…until he comes.”

3. WHEN? “Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup” (1 Cor. 11:25-26). “Until he comes” (11:26).

4. WHO? Who can come to the Lord’s Table? 1 Cor. 11:27-32. Those who are: 1. Saved, 2. Sins confessed, 3. Symbolism recognized, 4. United together as one body of Christ (“I hear…there are divisions among you…” (11:18)).

5. SO WHAT? So Confess your sins. Change your behavior. Recognize the symbolism of the Lord’s body given for you and the cup is the new covenant in His blood. Judge yourselves and you will not come under judgment or discipline, but never condemnation like the world (11:31-32).

6. SO NOW WHAT? Having done those things we should all be united and observe the Lord’s Supper together remembering His death for our sins. In doing so, properly, “you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes (11:26).” “Nowhere is God so near to seen as in Jesus Christ: and nowhere is Christ so familiarly represented to us as in this holy sacrament.” Richard Baxter
