Koda Energy Biomass to Energy

What is Koda Energy, LLC.? Koda is a partnership between Rahr and SMSC that creates “green energy” from burning dry biomass fuels. Koda’s combined heat and power plant power plant is located on Rahr property, in Shakopee MN. Biomass burned can include any dry fuel that can be milled. The facility design includes hammer mils to ensure fuel of the correct size. Modeling for air permitting was completed using various fuel mixes. The permit application lists the emissions form the higher end of the possible fuel range to allow flexibility on fuel supply. The likely emissions will be lower than any permitted levels. The actual facility will be located adjacent the existing RAHR facility tot facilitate heat use.

Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) A federally recognized Indian Tribe. The largest employer in Scott County. Nearly $700 million in annual revenues in Minnesota attributed to SMSC.

Rahr Malting Company The Rahr family has made malt for over160 years. The plant in Shakopee has been operational since 1936. The Shakopee plant currently employs over 100 highly skilled workers. It is one of the largest malting facilities in one location in the world.

Koda Production Koda’s has two products. 16.5 MWH of base load renewable energy. 125 MM BTU’s/hr of thermal energy. Rahr purchases all of the heat generated from this system to replace its natural gas use. > 80 Billion btu/month. The electricity generated from this system is: Purchased by the partners at avoided energy costs. Sold to outside power purchasers in need of base load and/or biomass renewable energy “Green Power”. Power production and heat output are related. The steam turbines chosen for the plant allow variable steam input. When the Rahr plant is operations require maximum heat the electricalgenerationn is approximately 12 megawatts net. When Rahr is operating at its lowest heat demand the electrical output is 19.5 megawatts net. If the air permit is issued as applied for the Rahr facility will have the ability to use some natural gas for heat if necessary. This allows the energy facility to operate at full electrical capacity if this provides greater income to the partners.
