How is energy measured in food? Calories: amount of heat needed to raise 1 kg of water 1°C How is energy measured in food?

6 nutrients needed by the body

1. Carbohydrates: main source of energy

Simple carbohydrates = sugars

Complex carbohydrates = starches & fiber

2. Proteins: for replacement & growth and repair of body cells

Made up of many amino acids Most are made in the body

Essential amino acids: 8 amino acids NOT made in the body

3. Lipids: fats Source of stored energy

Unsaturated fats: liquid at room temp Vegetable oils

Saturated fats: solid at room temp Associated with high cholesterol In meats, animal products, butter

4. Minerals: maintain bones, teeth, muscles and red blood cells Ex: Calcium, phosphorus, iodine…

5. Vitamins: maintain normal functioning of the body Disease prevention

6. Water: needed for maintenance of cytoplasm, blood and tissue fluid
