Berea-Midpark High School 2018-2019 Course Registration Guide

Important Items: Read your Registration Booklet carefully! Use the Table of Contents at the front of the book to help you find necessary information. Read the important information on p. 2-13 Course descriptions by department start on p. 14. Pages 78-82 list all of the courses offered at BMHS. BMHS Graduation Requirements (p. 3) 22 TOTAL credits 4 credits of English 4 credits of Math 3 credits of Science 3 credits of Social Studies 1 credit of Fine Art .50 Health, .50 PE, .50 Computer, .50 Financial Literacy

End of Course Exams and Graduation Points Students must take 7 end of course exams: ELA 1, ELA 2: must earn a minimum of 4 points total. Algebra 1, Geometry: must earn a minimum of 4 points total. Biology, US History, Government: must earn a minimum of 6 points total. Each test is scored 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). Total minimum points for all tests must be at least 18.

Eligibility (p. 3) Students must pass 2.5 credits each grading period with a minimum gpa of 2.0. Eligibility is determined each grading period using quarter grades. Exam and semester grades do not impact eligibility. *For 2018 – 2019, the district will have a probationary status for students with a quarter gpa between 1.5 and 1.99. This will allow the student to remain eligible through an academic contract.

College Credit Plus Ohio’s College Credit Plus (CCP) provides opportunities to earn college credit and high school credit through the successful completion of college courses. If interested, please discuss this program with your counselor. The Intent to Participate form, available online on the district website, is due April 1st. The Intent to Participate, Transcript Request, and CCP Application must be completed by February 1st in order to take the placement tests at MHJH.

CORE REQUIREMENTS FOR COLLEGE ADMISSION It should be noted that the minimum requirements for a high school diploma do not necessarily meet the entrance requirements for post high school education. The following are the Ohio Board of Regents recommendations of college preparatory programs for unconditional acceptance at Ohio private and public colleges and universities: 4 units of English, with emphasis on composition 4 units of Mathematics (beginning with Algebra 1) 3 units of Social Studies 3 units of Science 2 units of World Language (same language) 1 unit of Fine Arts

Honors Diploma Must meet all but one of the criteria below: Earn four units of English Earn four units of mathematics, including Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and another higher level math course. Earn four units of science, including physics and chemistry. Earn four units of social studies. Earn three units of one world language or two units each of two world languages. Earn one unit of fine arts. Maintain an overall grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, through the first semester of the senior year. Obtain a composite score of 27 on the American College Test (ACT) or a total score of 1210 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) based on critical reading and math.

PE WAIVER Under legislation by the Ohio General Assembly, interscholastic sports, cheerleading, and after-school marching band may be used to fulfill the requirement for the physical education requirement for graduation. In the Berea City Schools, only athletic programs sanctioned by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, cheerleading, and after-school marching band will be accepted for the PE Waiver. Students may request the opportunity to receive academic exemption for physical education by participating in any one of the above sanctioned activities in grades 9 -11. Students MUST successfully complete the two season(s) in which they have elected to participate by the end of his/her junior year to qualify. In the case of an exemption, the student would be excused from physical education classes, but his/her total number of credits for graduation would not change, therefore they would have to replace physical education with other academic electives or simply take physical education as an elective. The exemption will be noted on the student's official transcript once both seasons are successfully completed. In order to facilitate accurate scheduling and record keeping, we require each student to fill out an exemption form as well as indicate PE Waiver on his/her course selection sheet. The student/parent is required to complete the online application form found on the district website by March 1st for participating students.

Honors or Regular Classes? Each honors class requires at least ½ hour per night of homework. They also require extensive critical thinking skills. A teacher recommendation is recommended to enroll in any Honors class. Meet with your current counselor or teacher to determine how many Honors classes are appropriate. There is often summer reading for Honors courses.

During Scheduling Time 10th graders will select: Required Classes: English Math Science Social Studies Electives: -1,-2, -3, -4, -5 codes - Computer - AVID - Music - PLTW - Art - PE Electives - Family & Consumer Science - World Languages Sophomores considering attending POLARIS junior and senior years should consider the following: 1. Polaris students receive .50 credit computer. 2. Polaris students will take 3 classes at the high school their junior and senior year. 3. Sophomores should complete the following classes in order to attend Polaris: Health, two .25 PE Credits, World Language requirements if college bound, and the financial literacy requirement.

These classes meet semester 1 and semester 2. Fill in electives for both semesters Sign up for any core classes failed 1st semester of this year Write 4 elective choices on the front. Most electives are semester classes but some meet all year like Music and World Languages. This is your Dream Schedule. Scheduling conflicts and other variables may prevent a sophomore from receiving the exact schedule requested. Remember there are 2 more years!
