Multi-channel information for AP discovery September 2012 Multi-channel information for AP discovery Date: 2012-09-06 Authors: Name Affiliations Address Phone email Jing-Rong Hsieh HTC Corp. 1F, 6-3 Baoqiang Road, Xindian district, New Taipei City, Taiwan jing_hsieh@htc.com HTC Corp.

September 2012 Abstract This contribution introduces further considerations regarding “6.2.4 BSS Information on other channels” in TGai SFD. HTC Corp.

Conformance w/ TGai PAR & 5C September 2012 Conformance w/ TGai PAR & 5C Conformance Question Response Does the proposal degrade the security offered by Robust Security Network Association (RSNA) already defined in 802.11? No Does the proposal change the MAC SAP interface? Does the proposal require or introduce a change to the 802.1 architecture? Does the proposal introduce a change in the channel access mechanism? Does the proposal introduce a change in the PHY? Which of the following link set-up phases is addressed by the proposal? (1) AP Discovery (2) Network Discovery (3) Link (re-)establishment / exchange of security related messages (4) Higher layer aspects, e.g. IP address assignment 1 HTC Corp.

Fast Network Discovery (12/0157r12) September 2012 Fast Network Discovery (12/0157r12) 6.2.4 BSS Information on other Channels 802.11ai shall have mechanism to include information of the responding AP and other APs to the Probe Response HTC Corp.

Available information to attach in probe responses/beacons September 2012 Available information to attach in probe responses/beacons AP Channel Report (3 to 257) Operating Class(1 octets)/Channel (Variable octets) Multiple BSSID (3 to 257) BSSID Index (1)/DTIM Period(opt)(1)/DTIM Count(opt)(1) BSS Load (7) Station Count(2)/Channel Utilization(1)/Available Admission Capacity(2) Num/0~255/Time BSS Average Access Delay (6) Access Category Access Delay (4) (0~255) BSS Available Admission Capacity (4 to 28) Available Admission Capacity Bitmask (2)/Available Admission Capacity List (2*total num of nonzero bits) 0/1 , Time 47 octets HTC Corp.

BSS Information on other Channels September 2012 BSS Information on other Channels The information helps STA know the “existence” of other APs in other channels and allow them to move to the channel to scan However, they may not be superior to the one it just scanned PHY info such as signal quality is not conveyable To reduce unnecessary scans, in addition to existence, it may help if the “suitability” and “difference” between the scanned ones and the remaining ones is known to the STA If the BSS has many properties in common, Provide reason for the STA to continue scan for better channel or stop here whether the remaining ones are likely to be better or not HTC Corp.

September 2012 Proposal In addition to AP Channel Report, AP can attach the loading information of BSSs on other channels in the probe response and beacon for STA’s reference A condensed and aggregated loading information Use a coarser unit to represent info such as BSS load, BSS Avg access delay, BSS Available Admission Capacity A comparison (helpful in ESS case) A signed value of condensed loading information; A signal bit for a certain information (like a scoreboard) HTC Corp.

September 2012 Proposal STA, by the scan result, can include “STA Channel Report” in association request when it decides to join certain BSS Report to the APs with the existence of BSSs on other channels BSSs of the same SSID are more viable A condensed and aggregated loading information A comparison (helpful in ESS case) HTC Corp.

September 2012 Conclusion In addition to existence, more information can be provided to reduce unnecessary scan The information can be a comparison For ESSs with common capabilities, most recent information such as loading and access delay The notion of Multiple BSSID can be reused (only coding the different part based on a reference) For scanning STAs obtained this info can decide to continue scanning in the indicated better channels or even stop scanning Some of channels remaining in ChannelList of MLME-SCAN.request can be omitted based on Existence of BSSs Suitability and availability of BSSs HTC Corp.

September 2012 Straw Poll-1 Do you support the concept to include condensed loading-related information for other channels in the probe response and beacon? Yes: No: Abstain: HTC Corp.

September 2012 Straw Poll-2 Do you support the concept to include performance comparison information between channels in the probe response and beacon? Yes: No: Abstain: HTC Corp.
