Genetics

What do the words GENETICS or HEREDITY mean to you? Genetics - the variation of inherited characteristics. Heredity - the passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another. What traits or characteristics did you get (inherit) from your parents? Usually physical appearances are easy to spot. Do you look like your brother/sister/other family members? How so?

Human Traits You may have some traits like your classmates, even though you are not related. These traits usually go unnoticed. There are numerous traits in humans, but some traits occur more frequently than others. These are called high frequency traits. We’re going to see who has each of the following high frequency traits.

Tongue Rolling 70% can roll 30% can’t roll

Handedness – Are you right or left handed? 93% right handed

Hand Clasping – Fold your hands together interlocking your fingers Hand Clasping – Fold your hands together interlocking your fingers. Which thumb is on top (left or right)? 45% right on top 55% left on top

Hairline Shape – Widow’s Peak or Straight Line

Vulcan (Fingers Spread 2 by 2)

Dimples vs. No Dimples

Attached vs. Detached Earlobes

Bent Pinkie vs. Straight Pinkie

Hitchiker’s Thumb

Second Toe Longer than First Toe?

What’s behind these Inherited Traits What’s behind these Inherited Traits? Punnett’s Square – Big letters represent dominant alleles and little letters represent recessive alleles. ¼ chance you’ll inherit a trait.

Dominant vs Recessive Genes
