Engineering Variety Hour Turbine information

Measurements To measure our power output we connected a 100 ohm resistor to the turbine and then measured the voltage across the resistor. Using the power formula we found our power output was 96.1mw. Our efficiency was measured by measuring the windspeed of the powered fan (2.5m/s) and the wind swept area of our turbine (2200cm2). Our efficiency was 4.55%.

Our Turbine Our Turbine uses 3d printed blades following the Hugh Pickott design. We used paper to add unprecedented amounts of creativity.

Optimisation We tested our blades at different angles and found that about a 30o was best to our efficiency. We tirelessly tried many different forms of paper craft until we came to the conclusion that this was the optimal creative design.

Calculations Efficiency was found by using the following the formula. Power output of turbine/ Available power * 100 Available power was found by this formula: 0.5*(blade swept area)*1.23*v3 Power = Work/Time
