Outcomes All to know what Streseman achieved All to know the basic outline of the Dawes plan

The Golden Years The period between 1924-27 are sometimes referred to as the Golden Years of the Weimar republic The system of proportional representation meant that political groups should work together which they were not used to This lead to lots of squabbling to between parties but when coalition governments were formed meant that economic and political problems were not fixed

The Dawes Plan Stresemann believed that fulfilment was the best way of working with the Allies Germany still needed raw materials and to put confidence in the economy The Dawes Plan was put together by a group of economists who were led by the banker Charles Dawes. They agreed that the French would leave the Ruhr Reparations would be paid over a longer period of time An international loan would guarantee the repayments of the loans The Reichsbank would be set up under Allied Supervision

The SPD The biggest problem was guiding the Dawes Plan through the Reichstag due to Germany accepting the fact they would have to continue to pay reparations The collapse of support of the SPD made the a 2/3 ‘s agreement even harder to agree Support came through the DNVP, the largest party throughout this period However this led to other parties such as the DDP and Centre Party to withdraw their support However the SPD regained their lost seats in the 1924 election

Coalition of 1925 The SPD continue to obstruct the course of the Weimar republic by refusing to work with bourgeoisie parties However the could often strengthen governments with their support thereby undermining the process of democracy In 1925 this was further complicated by the coalition government formed by Hindenberg who was anti socialist

Review Write 2 pararaphs: Explain why by 1924 the majority of German politicians in the Reichstag were prepared to vote in favour of the Dawes plan despite the fatc that insisted that Germany must continue to pay reparations/
