Good and Evil in Romeo and Juliet Amy Anstett, Aleksandra Todic and Milica Kecman

Introduction “ A clear division between good and evil, right and wrong, would simplify everything, but life was rarely simple” (Melissa Marr). Thesis: In Romeo and Juliet, good and evil are found in everything Supporting ideas Fate in Romeo and Juliet is good and evil Love in Romeo and Juliet is both good and evil Situations Juliet is in demonstrate good and evil

Fate

Fate in Romeo and Juliet is good and evil. “These violent delights have violent ends, / And in their triumph die like fire and powder, / Which as they kiss consume. The sweetest honey / Is loathsome in his own deliciousness, / And in the taste confounds the appetite / Therefore love moderately, long love doth so; / Too swift arrives as tardy too slow” (2.6.9-15)

Fate in Romeo and Juliet is good and evil. “O God, I have an ill-divining soul! / Methinks I see thee now, thou art so low, /As one dead in the bottom of a tomb, /Either my eyesight fails, or thou look’st pale” (3.5.54-57)

Fate in Romeo and Juliet is good and evil. “Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here’s drink-I drink to thee” (4.4.58)

Conclusion For these reasons, it is evident that fate plays a good and evil role in Romeo and Juliet.

Love

Love in Romeo and Juliet is Good and Evil “I'll look to like, if looking liking move: / But no more deep will I endart mine eye / Than your consent gives strength to make it fly.” (1.3.98-100)

Love in Romeo and Juliet is Good and Evil “She speaks: / O, speak again, bright angel! for thou art / As glorious to this night, being o'er my head / As is a winged messenger of heaven / Unto the white- upturned wondering eyes / Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him / When he bestrides the lazy-pacing clouds / And sails upon the bosom of the air.” (2.2.25- 32)

Conclusion Love has both a good, and an evil effect on the characters and their lives in Romeo and Juliet.

Juliet

Situations Juliet is in demonstrate good and evil “ Evermore weep for your cousin’s death?/ What, wilt thou wash him from his grave with tears?/ And if thou couldst, thou couldst not make him live” (3.5.69-71).

Situations Juliet is in demonstrate good and evil “ Take thou this vial, being then in bed/ and this distilling liquor thou off/ When presently through all thy veins shall run… No warmth, no breath shall testify thou livest” (4.1.93-98)

Conclusion Juliet is a clear indicator that there is good and bad in the play Romeo and Juliet.
