EC curriculum reflecting the new primary curriculum The Project for Curriculum Reform at Primary Level of Basic Education in Myanmar (CREATE)

Activities of CREATE 1. CREATE supports MOE for development of primary curriculum, textbooks, and TG 2. CREATE supports MOE for reflecting the new primary curriculum in EC curriculum 3. CREATE supports MOE for dissemination of the new primary curriculum (to in-service teachers and the public)

Assumptions and limitations CREATE can work on only primary subject contents and subject pedagogy of EC curriculum This work needs to keep in step with the progress of primary curriculum (up to now, G2 contents and subject pedagogy are incorporated) What CREATE has developed needs to be adjusted when details of EC curriculum framework are confirmed (e.g. subject structure, number of periods, length of each lesson, etc.)

Steps of Development Step 1: Review current EC textbooks Step 2: Review new primary curriculum and textbooks with the support of CREATE subject advisors Step 3: Review the draft teacher competencies Step 4: Draft materials Step 5: Consultation with CREATE subject advisors (in the context of primary subject contents and pedagogy) Step 6: Consultation with Naruto University of Education in Japan (in the context of pre-service teacher education) Step 7: Trial at EC Step 8: Finalize materials Now repeating Step 4-7

EC Material Development Outline of Subject pedagogy part of 10 primary education subjects Lesson Plans for EC teachers Lecture note (=EC teacher’s guide) Students’ reference (handout)

(1) Proposed outline of Subject Pedagogy part in each subject Domain Topics Contents Domain 1: Objective of subject learning Objective of each subject Domain 2: Curriculum Strands, scope and sequence and contents of the subject Domain 3: How children learn Process of children’s learning, learning by developmental stage, learning activities that are appropriate for developmental stages, etc. Domain 4: How to support children’s learning Subject pedagogy used in new primary curriculum , microteaching, etc. Domain 5: How to evaluate students’ learning Formative assessment, summative assessment, item type assessment, performance assessment, reporting school and parents, etc.

(2) Lesson Plans for EC teacher Example of Mathematics Why we think lesson plans are needed: New primary curriculum requires substantial changes in teaching methodology. This also requires major changes in the way of teaching at EC. Students should be given many chances to think, observe, explore their ideas. In order to change the way of teaching at EC, we think Lesson plans are necessary.

(3) Lecture Note (EC teacher’s guide) Lecture note contains important points for EC teachers and supplemental information that helps EC teachers to conduct the lesson. Example of Mathematics, Lesson 5

(4) Students’ reference (handout) Students’ reference contains important points that EC students need to understand to teach primary students. This can be utilized as a part of the new EC textbooks.. Example of Mathematics
