Happy Land for Islamic Teachings Hijab Note: when you give da’wah in public to people, you don’t start with hijab, you start with prayer. Happy Land for Islamic Teachings

Happy Land for Islamic Teachings Hijab “Prophet! Say to your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers that they let down over themselves their over garments (jalaabeeb); this will be more proper, that they may be known, and thus they will not be given trouble and Allah is forgiving merciful.” (Ahzaab, 59) Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to […]. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. (An-Nur, 30-31) Happy Land for Islamic Teachings

Hijab No hijab in front of mahram. Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do. Happy Land for Islamic Teachings Was Hijaab only for the wives of the Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam? The classical usage was restricted to the wives of the Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. The modern usage is for the wives as well as all women. The Qur’anic usage of the word hijaab is very different; it literally means curtain – a physical curtain. We know this historically that the wives of the Prophets would not be seen, except if they were outside, and they would try to be covered as much as they could. Their level of hijaab was stricter. When ‘Aa`isha was in battle, she would be behind a curtain, in a tent on the camel. Also, we know that she was a great scholar of Islam that taught many men and narrated many hadith. When she would teach, there was a physical curtain in her house from behind which she taught. Happy Land for Islamic Teachings

Happy Land for Islamic Teachings Why do we wear hijab? Allah (SWT) said so. The Qur’anic usage of the word hijaab is very different; it literally means curtain – a physical curtain. We know this historically that the wives of the Prophets would not be seen, except if they were outside, and they would try to be covered as much as they could. Their level of hijaab was stricter. Happy Land for Islamic Teachings Why do we wear hijab? Added Benefits: 1. Purity of Heart 2. Sign of Chastity 3. Promotes healthiness in marriage 4. Increases modesty 5 Curbs perverted behavior 6. Protects natural beauty of women from being exploited 7. Part of inner beauty Purity of Heart: “[…] it is better for your hearts and theirs.” (ayah of hijaab) Doesn’t distract guys when talking to you. BBC did a survey where they had clips of news casters. They bought a group of men and had them watch. The men remembered what the men (news reporters) said and couldn’t remember what the woman said; all they could remember was the body of the woman. Food for thought  It is a Sign of Chastity: Allah says in Ahzaab: “this is better for them they are recognized and therefore not irritated.” It is a mark of women with higher ethics and morality; you treat them better. Sisters say hijaab draws attention, but it draws positive attention. Promotes healthiness in marriage: imagine a society where you grow up never having seen the beauty of another woman, or even beautiful faces. Imagine never having seen a non mahram. In this case, the average lady will be very attractive to you. When the average lady is compared to the world’s top super models, it is very unhealthy. You can’t expect your wife to look like that; those women are not even real.  Divorce rates are so high because our ideal marriages are based on Hollywood, etc. Increases  modesty: modesty is a branch of imaan. When Allah does not even want us to be naked alone, except in cases of showers, etc, then what about in front of others? When you are modest in your outer garments, then you will be more modest in your interactions, etc. The more humble you look, the more humble you will be. Curbs perverted behavior: There is a direct linkage between increase sexuality and an increase nudity. Do you think it’s a coincidence that with increased nudity we have increased homosexuality? For the first time in human history, homosexuality is so mainstream that ministers, priests, etc claim to be homosexuals. Never in history has a man proclaimed to be homosexual and a man of God. Even the people of Lut knew they were filthy and that Lut and his followers were pure. There is too much desensitization to nudity, which leads to homosexuality. (Interesting related article on Muslim Matters). Protects the natural beauty of women from being exploited. Part of the inner beauty: hijaab brings about their chastity and modesty. It gives them an inner beauty of imaan. Allah describes the hoor al ‘ayn in Jannah as women who have been separated and taken away from the eyes of other men in their tents (inner beauty). Happy Land for Islamic Teachings

Happy Land for Islamic Teachings ‘Awrah of Women Public or when family men/cousins come to visit The entire body, except for the face and the hands should be covered in front of non mahram men. There is no difference of opinion. Happy Land for Islamic Teachings

Happy Land for Islamic Teachings ‘Awrah of Women 2. Woman in front of her mahram male relatives There is ikhtilaaf (difference of opinion), and there is no specific ruling, therefore it goes back to what is culturally acceptable . A father has a right to tell his daughter to dress in a certain manner. Whatever  your father or brother feel comfortable with is what you are allowed to show. For example, if your father or brother are uncomfortable with you wearing a skirt that exposes part of your calves, then you shouldn’t wear it around the home. The sleeves can be half sleeves, etc. Happy Land for Islamic Teachings

Happy Land for Islamic Teachings ‘Awrah of Women 3. Women in front of other women Navel to the knee. You should not wear extremely tight clothing in front of other women. There is a level modesty in front of other women .

Happy Land for Islamic Teachings Requirements of Hijab Hijab should not be tight or transparent Hijaab should not be eye-catching in and of itself Should cover a woman’s awrah That she wear an outer garment over her regular clothes, that is, a jelbab. Allah clearly mentions the word jelbaab in the Qur’aan. Every society and culture has its own jelbaab, so it doesn’t have to be from country X .

Happy Land for Islamic Teachings Niqab There are many evidences for both opinions (whether it is mustahab – encouraged, or waajib).  It is waajib The ayah that we previously discussed said: “Let them lower their khimaar over their juyoob” — is to simply pull the the khimaar down. And if you simply pull the khimaaw down, it would cause you to cover your face. ‘Aa`isha narrates: “The travellers would pass us by while we were riding with the Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam during Hajj. So when they approached us, we would lower our jilbab from our heads over our faces, until they passed us, after which we would lift it off.” (Abu Dawood) “Let the woman in ihram not wear niqab or gloves.” [Al Bukhari] This means taht outside of hajj, they would be wearing it. That fact that the Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam had to give a general prohibition shows they normally wore niqaab. Niqaab is mustahab (encouraged) Hadith of Asmaa`: “O Asmaa`! When a woman comes of age, nothing should be seen of her except this and this,” and he sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam pointed towards his face and hands. There is debate over whether or not the hadith is authentic Hadith of Jaabir that on the day of Eid the Prophet sallalallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam went to the women to give them a lecture […until he said], “So a woman stood up, from the middle of the gathering, with dark cheeks, and asked…” [Bukhaari] In the hadith, the woman’s cheeks were uncovered and nobody criticized her. Happy Land for Islamic Teachings What about feet? Majority of scholars say that the feet is ‘awrah.
