Courtly Love In medieval times (just before Shakespeare), courtly love was a popular idea in literature. There were many stories about men desperately in love with women. Traditionally, the man fall in love with the woman at first sight, but he would not be able to be with her. He would worship the woman as though she were a goddess and he would perform courageous acts to try to win her love. In the courtly love tradition, a sexual union would never take place. O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear— Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows, As yonder lady o’er her fellows shows. The measure done, I’ll watch her place of stand, And touching hers, make blessed my rude hand. Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night. Rhyming couplets – increases the pace of the poetry. Metaphor and similes – Juliet’s beauty makes her stand out. Foreshadowing – Juliet is too beautiful for this world. Talks about Juliet as though she is a goddess. How does Shakespeare present Romeo’s reaction to his first sight of Juliet? When Romeo first sees Juliet, he talks about her as though she were a goddess. He says, ‘touching hers, make blessed my rude hand’. This shows that he thinks that just by touching her, he will experience a great change in himself. The lexical choice ‘blessed’ shows that he views her like a goddess because only a powerful, holy being can give a blessing. Shakespeare is using the traditions of courtly love from medieval literature, where a man would fall in love at first sight and worship his beloved like a goddess. Gold – analyse the implications of Act One, Scene Five for the characters Silver – understand and explain the events of Act One, Scene Five Bronze – know the events of Act One, Scene Five Lesson Objective: To analyse how Shakespeare presents love in Act One Scene One.
