Grab a book off the shelf and look it up. (Article V) An amendment: No person shall be elected to the office of representative more than eight times, and no person shall be elected to the office of senator more than three times. What process would we have to go through to get this added to the Constitution? Grab a book off the shelf and look it up. (Article V)

What Will I learn today? I can identify the process used to formally amend the Constitution. I can explain the difference between a formal and informal amendment. I can identify the ways in which the Constitution can be informally amended. I can explain how TLO v. New Jersey is an example of an informal amendment.

Amending the Constitution The Constitution provides for its own amendment— that is, for changes in its written words. Article V sets out two methods for the proposal and two methods for the ratification of constitutional amendments, creating four possible methods of formal amendment.

Formal Amendment Process The four different ways by which amendments may be added to the Constitution are shown here: How is this evidence of federalism?

Amendments to the Constitution What event led to…?

Informal Amendment Processes Informal amendment a change in the interpretation or meaning of the Constitution without changing the wording of it. The informal amendment process can take place by: (1) the passage of basic legislation by Congress; (2) actions taken by the President; (3) key decisions of the Supreme Court; (4) the activities of political parties; and (5) custom.

The 4th Amendment “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” What does this mean?

T.L.O. v. new jersey What happened? (Three sentences) Who did the Supreme Court side with? (One sentence) Why? (Three sentences) How does this change the 4th Amendment? (Three sentences)
