Al Capone Al Capone was born in 1899 in Brooklyn, New York to poor immigrants. He quit school at 12. Then he worked in a bowling alley and joined a gang. At 18, he moved his criminals to Chicago, and slowly took over organized crime there. The press called him ‘Scarface’. He killed at least 4 people himself, and ordered dozens of other murders. His organisation made about $100 million a year from gambling, bootlegging and extortion. He had a bullet-proof Cadillac limousine. In 1932, it was seized by the Treasury department. They sent it to Washington, and used it to transport President Roosevelt. Found guilty of tax evasion (avoiding paying taxes) in the same year, Capone was jailed for 8 years. He wasn’t convicted of any other crime. During his sentence, Prohibition ended, his gang fell apart, and he grew ill from syphilis. Once released in 1939, he moved to Florida. He died in 1947.
