Photography & Color

STEP 1 - LEARN In the next few slides, you will learn how color affects the viewer and how to utilize color in your photos.

AN EYE FOR COLOR Think about the colors in a picture frame before you plan or take the photo. Utilize the color wheel to create a snapshot that is appealing to the eye.

AN EYE FOR COLOR Monochromatic Colors A monochromatic color scheme uses primarily one color from the color wheel. Monochromatic Colors Emma Schock, Bryant High School [AR]

AN EYE FOR COLOR Monochromatic Colors Depending on the color and subject of the photo, a monochromatic color scheme can enhance the mood of the photo, making it calmer or more energetic. Monochromatic Colors Sara Benson, Shawnee Mission East High School [KS]

AN EYE FOR COLOR Analagous Colors An analagous color scheme utilizes colors that are next to one another on the color wheel. Notice how the strong color emphasizes her strong emotions. Analagous Colors Mackenzie Phillips, Texas High School [TX]

AN EYE FOR COLOR Analagous Colors An analagous color scheme utilizes colors that are next to one another on the color wheel. Notice how the strong color emphasizes her strong emotions. Analagous Colors Savannah Pritchard, Texas High School [TX]

AN EYE FOR COLOR Complimentary Colors The colors in this photo pop because the photographer emphasized complimentary colors. Complimentary colors are directly across from one another on the school year and are the same strength. Complimentary Colors Terry Vo, La Quinta High School [CA]

AN EYE FOR COLOR Complimentary Colors Ann Sutton, Windsor High School [CO]

ADJUSTING COLOR IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP Use the curves function in Photoshop or another photo editing software to adjust a photo when one color tints the entire photo. This is common in photos taken in school gyms, which tend to turn yellow. To get to the Curves Palette: Image>Adjustment>Curves. In this case, click on the white eyedropper and then click on something that is supposed to be white in the photo, like one of the boys’ shirt sleeves.
