Elements and Compounds

Elements, Compounds, Mixtures Explain the relationship between elements, atoms, compounds, and molecules Determine the number of atoms in a compound based on its chemical formula

There are billions of materials in our universe. Those materials are made up from about 100 elements only.

An element is a substance that is made from one kind of atom only An element is a substance that is made from one kind of atom only. It cannot be broken down into simpler substances. atom atom An element An element

A compound is a substance that is made from more than one element. atom atom A compound made up of 2 different elements A compound made up of 7 different elements

Atom: the simplest building block of matter. Molecule: a group of atoms joined together with chemical bonds

Element: a substance made of one kind of atom.

Compound: a substance made up of 2 or more different elements Compound: a substance made up of 2 or more different elements. Compounds are made of identical molecules. Glucose C6H12O6 Water H2O

Mixture : a mix of different atoms and molecules that are not chemically bonded Salt water Air

Na + Cl  NaCl (table salt) 18181818 Compounds have completely different properties than the elements that make them up Sodium (Na) is a soft, silvery white metal that is highly reactive. Chlorine (Cl) is a green, poisonous gas Na + Cl  NaCl (table salt) Sodium chloride (NaCl) is a white crystal essential for life

All compounds have a chemical formula The formula tells you which elements make up a compound as well as how many atoms of each element are present. H2O is the chemical formula for water, H2O2 is the chemical formula for hydrogen peroxide.

How to read a formula H20 This is a subscript. It tells us how many atoms of that element exist in one molecule of that compound. Water molecules are made of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. No subscript is used when only one atom of an element is present.

Check For Understanding In your notes, determine the number of atoms based on the chemical formula Sulfuric Acid H2SO4 ____ Hydrogen atoms ____ Sulfur atoms ____ Oxygen atoms Fools Gold (Iron Sulfide) FeS2 ____ Iron atoms

Calcium Carbonate (chalk, limestone) CaCO3 Carbon Dioxide CO2 ________________ Carbon Monoxide CO Calcium Carbonate (chalk, limestone) CaCO3

When you see parenthesis, distribute (multiply) across Magnesium Sulfate Mg(SO4)2 ________________ Ammonium oxide (NH4)2S

When you see parenthesis, distribute (multiply) across Ammonium carbonate (NH4)2CO3 ________________ Calcium phosphate Ca3(PO4)2

Exit Quiz List all of the elements made of atoms List all of the elements made of molecules List all of the compounds made of molecules and provide the number of each kind of atom

Compound Review Compounds are substances with 2 or more elements are chemically combined Compounds are made of molecules Compound properties are different from the properties of the elements Compounds can only be broken down into its elements through a chemical reaction All compounds have a chemical formula which indicates the ratio of each element
