RAG Starter Activity Complete the ‘Heard the Word Grid.’ Title RAG To assess my understanding of solving equations. 14-Nov-18 Starter Activity Complete the ‘Heard the Word Grid.’ Are there any key words that you have learnt or have a better understanding of now than you did at the start of this unit of work? 1

Key Words Never heard before? Heard of but not sure what it means? Know what it means and can explain it in context Jot down your ideas here... Equation Expression Formula Substitute Term Solve Unknown

5 4 3 2 1 Solving Equations I am beginning to understand the role of the = sign I can find missing numbers. I can solve simple one step equations. I can construct and solve linear equations with unknowns on one side including negative numbers. I can construct and solve linear equations with unknowns on both sides including with negative numbers and brackets.

+ 70 = 82 + = 100 Write the missing number in the box. Fluency Questions and Answers Fluency Write the missing number in the box. Problem Solving What could the missing numbers be? Reasoning True or false? ‘The number in the first box could be 8 and the number in the second box could be 6.’ Give a reason for your answer. 3 + = 5 + + 70 = 82 + = 100

The missing number is 1 because 2 Question Working out / Answer Fluency Write the missing number in the box. Problem Solving 'I think of a number and add 12. The answer is 17.‘ What number did I think of? Give a reason for your answer. Reasoning x 2 = 40 - 7 = 8 The missing number is 1 because 8 – 7 = 1. What mistake have I made? What is the correct answer?

3 Question Working out / Answer Fluency 5c = 40 C = Problem Solving I have a mystery number of sweets. I share them between 6 pupils. Each pupil gets 3 sweets. How many sweets did I start with? Reasoning When solving an equation how can you check that your answer is correct. Give me an example.

Show all your working out. 4 Question Working out / Answer Fluency Solve this equation. 3c + 7 = 25 Show all your working out. Problem Solving Find and correct the mistake 2a – 10 = 32 2a = 22 a = 11 Reasoning The length of a rectangle is three times its width. Its perimeter is 24cm. Explain how you would go about finding the length of the rectangle. 3w w

Solve this equation. 8a - 3 = 5a + 9 Question Working out / Answer Fluency Solve this equation. 8a - 3 = 5a + 9 Problem Solving The area of this rectangle is 40cm2. Calculate the value of y and use it to find the width of the rectangle 3y + 1 8y - 14

Look at how I solved this equation. Find and correct my mistakes. 5 Question Working out / Answer Reasoning Look at how I solved this equation. Find and correct my mistakes. 5(5y – 2) = 6(3y + 3) Get rid of the brackets 25y – 2 = 18y + 3 Subtract 18x from both sides 7y – 2 = 3 Subtract 2 from both sides 7y = 1 Divide by 7 y = 1 7
