–Biology is the study of life and can be used to both solve societal problems and explain aspects of our daily lives.
Aim: What is matter? I. Matter – anything that has mass and volume. A. Atoms - A unit of matter, the smallest unit of an element, having all the characteristics.

Studying Life.  “ Bios” = life  “Ology” = the study of something  Biology = study the of life  Biologists = people who study biology  Study interactions.
How are living things organized? There are various levels of organization: and get bigger. Let’s start small.

Bio Bingo 1-5 a group of localized tissues in the body which perform similar functions novel characteristics that appear at each level of the biological hierarchy as a result of interactions among components at the lower levels a property arising at the cellular or organism level of organization natural unit consisting of all plants, animals and micro-organisms in an area functioning together with all of the physical factors of the environment a property arising at the community level of organization

Bio Bingo 6-10 smallest unit of an organism that is classified as living a property arising at the ecosystem level of organization branch of biology that studies the structure and design of living things collection of inter-breeding organisms of a particular species a property arising at the population level of organization

Bio Bingo 11-15 a single unit that displays all the properties of life, may be unicellular or multicellular branch of biology that studies the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of living things basic unit of matter consisting of a dense, central nucleus surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons can be described as the zone on Earth where life dwells collection of populations of different species, interacting with one another

Bio Bingo 16-20 group of biological cells that perform a similar function group of glands that regulate the release chemical messengers called hormones into the bloodstream group of organs performing related functions specialized subunit within a cell that has a specific function stable, electrically neutral group of at least two atoms in a definite arrangement held together by very strong (covalent) chemical bonds.

Emergent properties Novel properties that appear at each level of the biological hierarchy as a result of interactions among components at the lower levels “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
