Important Terms to Know CAD: Computer Assisted Drafting Command: An instruction issued to the computer to complete a specific task Workspace: a preset work environment containing specific interface items Interface: items that allow you to input data to and receive outputs from a computer system Toolbars: interface items that contain two buttons or drop- down list.

Important Terms to Know Command Line: area where you can type commands and options Dialog Box: a window-like item that contains various settings and information Escape Key: keyboard key used to cancel a command or exit a dialog box Enter Key: keyboard key used to accept commands or preformed the default action of certain commands.

Important Keyboard Commands Ctrl+X: CUT Copies selected objects to the Clipboard and removes them from the drawing. Ctrl+C: COPY Copies objects a specified distance in a specified direction. Ctrl+V: PASTE Pastes objects from the Clipboard into the current drawing.

Important Keyboard Commands Ctrl+Z: UNDO Reverses the effect of commands. NOTE UNDO has no effect on some commands and system variables, including those that open, close, or save a window or a drawing, display information, change the graphics display, regenerate the drawing, or export the drawing in a different format. Ctrl+Y: REDO Reverses the effects of previous UNDO or U command. REDO must immediately follow the U or UNDO command.

Important Terms to Know Zoom: make objects appear bigger by zooming in or smaller but zooming out on the screen without affecting their actual size. To see your entire drawing  Zoom Extents Z  (ENTER)  E (ENTER) Pan: change the drawing display to select different portions of the drawing are visible on screen.

The DRAW Toolbar LINE Creates straight line segments. Can create a series of attached line segments. Each segment is a line object that can be edited separately

Drawing Aids Drawing Aids Toolbar ORTHO POLAR OSNAP

Drawing Aids Polar Tracking: a drawing aid that causes the drawer in crosshairs to snap to predefined angle increments. Ortho: (from orthogonal) which means at right angles.

The MODIFY Toolbar OFFSET Creates concentric circles, parallel lines, and parallel curves. You can offset an object at a specified distance or through a point. After you offset objects, you can trim and extend them as an efficient method to create drawings containing many parallel lines and curves.

Drawing Aids Object Snap: a tool that snaps to exact points such as an endpoint, midpoint, or points on or in relation to the existing objects. Snapping: picking a point near the intended position to have the crosshairs snap exactly that specific point. Drawing Aids Toolbar

The MODIFY Toolbar TRIM Cuts objects to meet the edges of other objects. To trim objects, select the boundaries. Then press Enter and select the objects that you want to trim. To use all objects as boundaries, press Enter at the first Select Objects prompt.

Important Keyboard Commands Ctrl+C: COPY Copies objects a specified distance in a specified direction. Using the Copy button allows the user to specify a basepoint in copying the object.

Important Keyboard Commands Selection Tool To select objects, you can simply click on them. To add more, keep clicking. To deselect objects, hold down SHIFT and select them again. To select objects in an area, click once and drag a window around them. Pulling a window top left to bottom right (BLUE) selects only objects that are entirely within the window. Pulling a window bottom right to top left (GREEN) selects all objects at are within or partially touching the window

The MODIFY Toolbar ROTATE Revolves objects around a base point. You can rotate selected objects around a base point to an absolute angle.

The MODIFY Toolbar ERASE the command to remove objects from a drawing Users can also select objects and use the DELETE or BACKSPACE keys You can erase selected objects from the drawing. This method does not move objects to the Clipboard, where they can then be pasted to another location. Selection Set: a group of one or more selected objects typically created to perform an editing operation on the selected objects

The MODIFY Toolbar MOVE Transports objects a specified distance in a specified direction. Use coordinates, grid snaps, object snaps, and other tools to move objects with precision

The MODIFY Toolbar EXTEND Extends objects to meet the edges of other objects. To extend objects, first select the boundaries. Then press Enter and select the objects that you want to extend. To use all objects as boundaries, press Enter at the first Select Objects prompt.

The MODIFY Toolbar MULTILINE TEXT (MTEXT) Creates a multiline text object. You can create several paragraphs of text as a single multiline text object. With the built-in editor, you can format the text appearance, columns, and boundaries. Going forward, it is UNACCEPTABLE to hand write you name on our papers when handing in. The MODIFY Toolbar MIRROR Creates an exact copy of selected objects around a specified axis You can create objects that represent half of a drawing, select them, and mirror them across a specified line to create the other half.

The MODIFY Toolbar FILLET Rounds and fillets the edges of objects. To create a sharp corner instead, enter a radius of zero

The MODIFY Toolbar CHAMFER Bevels the edges of objects. The distances and angles that you specify are applied in the order that you select the objects.

The DRAW Toolbar POLYLINE (PLINE) Creates a 2D polyline a single object that is composed of line and arc segments. A 2D polyline is a connected sequence of segments created as a single planar object.

The DRAW Toolbar RECTANGLES (RECTANG) Creates a rectangular polyline. You can specify the rectangle parameters (length, width, rotation) and control the type of corners.

The DRAW Toolbar CIRCLE A closed curve with a constant radius around a center point. Tangent a line circle or arc that meets another circle or arc at only one point

The DRAW Toolbar POLYGON Creates an equilateral closed polyline Inscribed in Circle: Specifies the radius of a circle on which all vertices of the polygon lie within. Circumscribed about Circle: Specifies the distance from the center of the polygon to the midpoints of the edges of the polygon.

The DRAW Toolbar ELLIPSE An oval shape that contains two centers of equal radius Major axis the longer of the two axes. Minor Axis the shorter of the two axes.
