Cloud vs Local: Better Data Storage Device Mengxuan Chen Edward Liu 1 1

Audience In the new information technology era, universities offer students digital files over hard copies Students need a secure, yet easy to use way to store such digital files This investigation is aiming to solve this problem - The audience of this investigation would be university students 2 2

Problem Compare cloud data storage services and local data storage devices to determine: What is the balance of security and usability for data storage devices? What is the ideal data storage device which satisfies both security and usability criteria for the university students? 3 3

Why is this important? Students need a good way to store study notes and material If data is lost, students will have to waste time to recomplete assignments It is difficult for students to choose between cloud and local data storage. We help students decide by exploring the balance between usability and security between these two storage mediums 4 4

History 5 5 1920s Magnetic tapes 1970s Floppy disk 1980s CD disk 1990s Flash memory card 2000s Solid state drive(SSD) Today Cloud data storage 5 5

What is Cloud data storage and Local data storage ? User upload data from their local computing system to the third party storage server (virtualized pools). The third party storage server is generally refer as “cloud” User can buy or lease the data storage capacity from the cloud service provider Local data storage A device that is physically present and stores data One of the popular local data storage device is USB flash drive The portable data storage devices are defined as any computer devices from which data can be read and written 6 6

Cloud data storage evaluation 7 7

Local data storage evaluation 8 8

Solution The solution is simple: the local data storage devices manufacturers could add cloud data storage services to their products as an add-on feature Students could store the important files in locally and frequently used files in the cloud This combination would be the best choice for the average university students 9 9
