Natives Enslaved & Africans slaves used after natives died Land Claims made by Spanish, French, British, Dutch, & Danish in the 19th century He thought he was in the East Indies Spanish set up sugar plantations

Fight for Independence Late 1700s: Slave revolt in Haiti 1804: Haiti independent from France 1898: Cuba freed from Spain 1962: Jamaica, Trinidad, and Tobago freed from Great Britain

Economy During colonialism, many people are poor Sugar trade declined due to competition from overseas Export crops: sugar, bananas, & coffee Pay is very low
