Presentation transcript:

Chapter 10-1 The First Christians Jerusalem = capital / Israel in 900sBC divides into Israel & Judah Emperor Augustus = made Judah into a province called Judaea in 6 AD Zealots = rebellion against the Roman’s AD 66 defeated & Temple destroyed AD 132 Jews rebelled again & were defeated

What happened after the Jews were banished from Jerusalem? The Jews settled in many far-off places, such as Spain and central Asia. However, they still kept their religion alive.

Messiah = Jews believed God would send a messiah to restore their kingdom Messiah = (2) Suffering / Reigning Jesus = born Nazareth preached throughout Judea Sermon on the Mount = (parables: stories/events) Preached love, forgiveness, not religious law Followers = Jesus = Messiah / leaders in Jerusalem charge him w/ treason & crucify him

Why did Roman rulers punish Jesus with death? They feared his preaching would create a strong reaction among people that would threaten law and order.

Christians = believe Jesus is God & Son of God / (1 god) Salvation found only through him Monotheistic = one God / Trinity = 3 in 1 (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) Evangelize = converting people to Christianity 1st Christians were Jews & Christianity was viewed as a sect within Judaism

What were some ways that Judaism and Christianity differ? Christians believe Jesus was the messiah. Most Jews do not believe Jesus was messiah. Christians also believe God is three people. Jews do not believe in the Trinity.
