Meet the author

Chapter 1-2 Questions (cite evidence to support your answer.) 1. What gift did Brian’s mother give him during the car ride? Why would this be a useful gift for him? 2. Describe the pilot’s heart attack symptoms. 3. Identify the figurative language in the following line: “It was as if his hands and arms were lead.” What does it mean? 4. Make an inference to determine why Brian vomited after the engine stopped roaring.

Chapter 3-4 Questions (cite evidence to support your answer.) Explain why Brian described the trees as “green death.” Why was the lake the best option for Brian’s landing? Make an inference to explain why Brian was so fatigued (tired). Describe the scenery Brian sees as he finally stands.

Chapter 5-6 Questions (cite evidence to support your answer.) Why is Brian a bit skeptical about drinking water from the lake? How are the words of Brian's teacher encouraging him? Explain Brian’s first good luck. How was Brian able to locate the berries?

Chapter 7 Questions (cite evidence to support your answer.) Infer why you think Brian is sick. What did Brian eat to stave off his hunger? How is Brian so sure that the new berries are actually raspberries? Why didn’t the bear attack Brian?

Chapter 8 Questions (cite evidence to support your answer.) Who was the surprise attacker? Explain the pain Brian was experiencing from pulling out quills. What proved to be an important rule of survival? How did Brian finally get to have a fire?

Chapter 9-10 Questions (cite evidence to support your answer.) What items did Brian use when he tried to start a fire? Why would Brian refer to the fire as his friend? Make an inference to determine why it would be smart to keep a fire going all day long. How were the turtle eggs similar to chicken eggs? How were they different?
