3 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 What is the Files panel? The Files panel displays the file and folder structure of your site. You can use the Files panel to add and delete files or folders to your site. If you use the Files panel to maintain your site, the link information is automatically updated if you move a linked file. Depending on your platform and version of Dreamweaver, the Files panel may open and only show the local site, or it may show two panes, one for the local site and one for the remote site.

The right-side pane shows the local site, arranged in folders and files. You can choose from several views using the Site Files, Testing Server, and Site Map buttons. You can click buttons to check in files, check out files, retrieve files, or put files back.

5 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 Add new files or folders using the Files panel This figure shows the context menu for the Files panel. You right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh) in the Local File pane of the Files panel to display the menu. Click the New File or New Folder button to create a new file or folder. You can open files from this menu, or check files in or out as well. You can also use the Edit submenu to delete files, rename them, or duplicate them.

6 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 Create a site map A site map, is a visual representation of your site and all linked pages. Your home page will display at the top level. Links to other pages are shown as connecting lines with arrowheads indicating the direction of the connection. Broken links appear in red.

7 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 Site map options You can change the appearance of the site map and perform other operations with it, such as: You can view it vertically instead of horizontally. You can save the site map as a graphic that can be used in a Web page or an image-editing software program. You can view a subset of the whole site. You can modify page information from the Files panel. You can move a file to new location within the site using the Files panel.

8 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 Customize the Files panel You can customize the Files panel to meet your needs. Some operations you can perform include: Reorder existing information. Show or hide columns. Add new columns. Change the size of existing columns.

Open this box by clicking the View menu and then clicking File View Columns (Windows), or click the Site menu, point to Site Files view, and then click File View Columns (Macintosh). Select a column and reorder it by clicking the up or down arrow buttons. Add or delete columns by clicking the + and – buttons.

10 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 Connect to a remote site The local site is contained on your computer and contains all the files needed for your Web site. For anyone else to view your site, it must be copied to a remote site on a Web server. You can simulate a remote site by creating one on your local machine that allows you to test the Get and Put functions used to transfer files from local to remote sites and vice versa.

11 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 Set up a connection to a remote site Click the Site menu and then click Manage Sites to open the Manage Sites dialog box. Select your local site and click Edit. Click the Basic tab, then click the Next button until you reach the sharing files section of the Site Definition Wizard, and select the Yes, I want to use a remote server option, the click Next. Select the Local/Network option and locate the folder to be used as your remote site folder. (continued)

12 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 Set up a connection to a remote site (continued) When the Choose Remote Root Folder dialog box opens, click Desktop from the Select (Windows) or From (Macintosh) menu, then click Create New Folder (Windows) or New Folder (Macintosh). Rename the folder if desired, then select it. Click Open and then click Select or Choose depending on the platform. Select the Refresh Remote File List Automatically option, then click Next until you reach the Summary section of the wizard. Click Done.

13 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 Uploading files to the remote site If using FTP or Local/Network access to the remote site, Dreamweaver can identify the newest files on your local site and upload only those files. You can select any files in the local site and use the Put File(s) command to load them from the local to the remote site. You can use the Get File(s) command to retrieve files from the remote site to the local site.

14 Managing Your Site – Lesson 6 The Dependent Files dialog box This figure shows the Dependent Files dialog box. When uploading files from the local to the remote site, you can choose whether or not to upload dependent files when the HTML pages are uploaded. If a page has images that have not changed since the last HTML change, click No and only the HTML file will be copied. If you click Yes, all images for the page will also be uploaded to the remote site.
