Should we use plastic? Venus corbin-may

What is plastic? Plastic is any synthetic or semi- synthetic organic polymer. In other words, while other elements may be present, plastics always include carbon and hydrogen. While plastics may be made from just about any organic polymer, most industrial plastic is made from petrochemicals.

Use and Benefits of Plastics Plastic is very useful because it can be colored, melted, shaped, squashed, rolled into sheets or made into fibers plastics. Plastic also are hygienic and it is not poison to our bodies. Plastic is used made ropes that are very strong and fishing lines, glues and paints. The benefits of plastics are unmatched by any other material, says the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI). It is light, easily shaped, strong, and inexpensive. ... Plastic packaging withstands the rigors of shipping, and plastic containers provide good storage solutions at home and in the office.

Why plastic is bad for the environment? Land. Chlorinated plastic can release harmful chemicals into the surrounding soil, which can then seep into groundwater or other surrounding water sources and also the ecosystem. This can cause serious harm to the species that drink the water. Landfill areas contain many different types of plastics. Water. Animals mistaken plastic for food. They can be entangled in plastics and deform their growth or be killed by it. The chemicals in the water are making animals sick. There is research that links plastics to cancer.

What Can We Do? Don’t litter Use recyclable plastics use reusable bags for groceries Use Reusable bottles for water Increase use of reusable items or use paper, metal or other compostable disposable items What Can We Do?
