Computer Networks Mobile IP

Motivation With the advent of popular wireless technologies (e.g. cellular phones), a wireless IP device moving between networks means that the host’s address must change or that routers must propagate host specific routes across the entire internetwork. Neither of these solutions work well, enter Mobile IP.

Mobile IP Basics Home Address Mobile/Roaming IP Address Home Agent Home Network Foreign Network Foreign Agent (care-of address)

Usage Registration Encapsulation Routing Performance Triangular routing Crossing paths Performance

Mobile IP Illustrated

Challenges Privacy NAT (again!) Triangular routing exists as long as there are legacy IPv4 stacks deployed Routes aren't the only thing that change Many people don't see this happening
