French Regime: The Rise of New France 1608-1760

So what have we looked at so far? The First Occupants and how they lived in what is now Quebec and Ontario before contact with Europeans. Explorers and the countries that employed them. Why did they explore the world by sea? What were their motives? Where did they colonize? Did they colonize? First contacts between Europeans and the First Occupants: the changes that occurred when the FO adopted some European practices

New France: How did it Start? We know earlier attempts to set up a colony failed…. BOOOO Cartier!!! North America was just not profitable in the early 1500s the way the King of France wanted it to be… However, many countries still sent boats to fish cod in the St-Lawrence Golf & in the Grand Banks near NFLD. Fishermen lived on the East coast while they fished  drying fish and trading with FO  FURS, FURS and more FURS!!!!!!!

Permanent Settlements Europe 1580s  fur hats fashionable! French King realizes that North America = Furs = $$$$$ & a colony But….. King had no $$$ because of wars in France….

I’m Poor, How do I Set Up a Colony? 1580  French King wanted to set up a permanent settlement (colony) How did he get the money? He asked wealthy entrepreneurs (business men) to set up a colony in what is now Quebec

What did the Wealthy Dudes Get? The wealthy guys tried to set up colonies for the King of France in return for….. The rights to be the only people to bring back furs for North America (monopoly)

1st Settlement: Port Royal 1603 Port Royal was established where Nova Scotia is now A small settlement of 100 men Not a great place for the fur trade  far for FO to bring furs Settlement eventually failed

Samuel de Champlain In 1608, Samuel de Champlain was entrusted with setting up a colony in North America He chose a site that is now Quebec city  strategic for overlooking the St-Lawrence River and a good place for trading with FO

Economy & New France in the early 1600s MERCHANTILISM What does that mean? An economic theory Step 1) A mother country takes resources form it’s colonies Step 2) Uses resources to make goods Step 3) Sells finished goods back to people in colonies and to other countries Step 4) Mother country becomes ‘baller$$$$$’

Trading posts early 1600s The first settlements in New France had trading posts Trading posts were used to acquire furs (and other goods) from the First Occupants  bring back to Franc….

Hunters sell furs to companies in New France (trading posts) Factories in France turned the furs into hats, clothing, etc. FURS Sold back to New France and other European countries for profit $$$$$ Hunters get Furs

Chartered Company System 1601-1627  monopolies were not considered profitable in NF. Only small amounts of people settled in NF… In 1627  The King gave over the monopoly to ONLY ONE company COMPANY OF 100 ASSOCIATES

100 Associates The Company of 100 Associates HAD TO populate the St-Lawrence valley region in return for the monopoly in the fur trade They also had to manage it (people, roads, buildings, etc.) 1645 The company handed over control to another company ‘Communauté des Habitants’
