Peer Review Types of Peer Review Single Blind Reviewers anonymous Double Blind Reviewers and author anonymous Open Reviewer and author know each other Single Blind Most Common Reviewer anonymity allows impartial decisions Authors may have concern reviewers delay publication in order to publish first Reviewers may use anonymity as justification for being overly critical and harsh Double Blind Author anonymity prevents reviewer bias Content considered over prestige of author Reviewers can identify author through writing style/subject matter/self citation Open Review Believed to be best to prevent malicious comments/plagiarism/pushing agendas Encourages open and honest reviewing Some see it as a less honest process where politeness or fear of retribution causes reviewer to withhold criticism Image and Data: https://www.elsevier.com/reviewers/what-is-peer-review

Peer Review Articles can be transferred Heavy scrutiny Authors must defend data Not for thin skins Funding rides on publications Retraction is lethal to careers Falsifying data can mean jail High quality journals are rigorous Single Blind Most Common Reviewer anonymity allows impartial decisions Authors may have concern reviewers delay publication in order to publish first Reviewers may use anonymity as justification for being overly critical and harsh Double Blind Author anonymity prevents reviewer bias Content considered over prestige of author Reviewers can identify author through writing style/subject matter/self citation Open Review Believed to be best to prevent malicious comments/plagiarism/pushing agendas Encourages open and honest reviewing Some see it as a less honest process where politeness or fear of retribution causes reviewer to withhold criticism

Peer Review Vital for scientific progress Holds scientists accountable Data verified by experts in the field Images and Data: http://theconversation.com/explainer-what-is-peer-review-27797

Scientific Method Format Repeatable Experiment Publication types Research Scientific Method Format Repeatable Experiment Data and Conclusions These papers talk about original research work.

Publication types Review Summarizes Concepts Summarizes Previous Work Meta Analysis Possible Directions of Research Common in Medical Journals Publication types

Peer Review A review article is not original research. They summarize already performed research explaining the general consensus of the scientific community on a topic.  Review tent to be A narrative review explaining the existing knowledge. A systematic review looking for the answer to a question in existing research literature on a scientific topic. A meta-analysis compares and combines the findings of previously published studies. This can look for trends in populations and be effective in determinging the success/effectiveness of a treatment or influence of any given variable Review papers can be useful in giving an explanation of the current state of a field of research to not only summarize current work, but also generate new directions for potentially beneficial research. Though reviews are good resources, it is important to consider the original research it references by looking at the study, the methods, sample size, and conflicts of interest. Review papers should not be exempt from scrutiny just because they are explaining others’ research. Checking the journal that a review paper is published in can help weed out potentially misleading review papers.

B = the total number of "citable items" published in 2015 and 2016 Impact Factor Measure reflecting how often an article from a particular journal gets cited Academics and grant givers use it for where to publish and who gets grants A = the number of times articles published in 2015 and 2016 were cited in 2017 B = the total number of "citable items" published in 2015 and 2016 A/B = 2017 impact factor

Impact Factor http://www.sciencemag.org/news/ Measure reflecting how often an article from a particular journal gets cited Citeable items (new items learned) affects the score Number of citations affects the score  Publish in a prestigious journal, get cred Numbers can be misleading Heavy criticism Just because you publish in a high IF journal does not mean you will get cited. The calculations from JIF ia a bit opaque. The  citation distributions are so skewed that up to 75% of the articles in any given journal had lower citation counts than the journal's average number. So trying to use a journal’s JIF to forecast the impact of any particular paper is close to guesswork. (science mag) http://www.sciencemag.org/news/
