CUBISM Invented around 1907 in Paris by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque The first abstract style of modern art A Cubist painting ignores the traditions of perspective drawing and shows you many views of a subject at one time. The Cubists were influenced by art from other cultures, particularly African masks. There are two distinct phases of the Cubist Style: Analytical Cubism (pre 1912) and Synthetic Cubism (post 1912) (introduction of collage).

George Braque 1882-1963 He and Pablo Picasso between 1909-11 developed Analytic Cubism Later the invention of collage technique lead to the more symbolic synthetic cubism Enough of the objects are seen to be able to tell the subject matter Real pieces of paper replaced painted flat depictions of paper. Man With a Guitar, 1907 The Musician 1918

PABLO PICASSO 1881-1973 A passionate spaniard that moved to france to pursue his art career His early works 1901-04 were labeled the blue period for the lonely feeling and overall BLUE tone. He was said to be mourning the suicide of his best friend Carlos Casagemas The Old Guitar Player, 1903-04

Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, 1907 a large oil painting created in 1907.
