John 14:1-6

In this lesson, let us consider the various “I am…” statements of Jesus that are recorded in John’s Gospel (John 6:35, 41, 48, 51; 8:12, 58; 9:5; 10:7, 9, 11, 14; 11:25; 14:6, 10, 11; 15:1, 5).

In saying “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35, 41, 48, 51) and “I am the true vine” (John 15:1, 5), Jesus promises sustenance.

In saying “I am the Light of the world,” Jesus promises enlightenment (John 8:12; 9:4-5; cf. 12:35-36).

In saying “I am the resurrection and the life,” Jesus promises eternal life (John 11:25; cf. 14:6).

In saying “I am the door of the sheep,” Jesus promises protection (John 10:7, 9). In saying “I am the good shepherd,” Christ also promises leadership (John 10:11, 14).

As a result of His miraculous works, we have reason to believe Christ’s message (John 10:22-39). Because of His relationship with the Father, Jesus can deliver on these promises (John 8:56-58; 14:8-14).
