Do Now What does it mean to “set the tone” or be a “trend setter”? Why is it important to do these things?

I. George Washington’s Presidency

A. Political Problems Hamilton’s Economic Plan: Cabinet members: Secretary of Treasury: Hamilton Secretary of State: Jefferson How do you think this might lead to problems? The plan, supported by Washington was eventually passed into law.

A. Political Problems Whiskey Rebellion – caused by tax on whiskey that was part of Hamilton’s Economic Plan. Good example of Washington “setting the tone”. How and why do you think he did this during the Whiskey Rebellion?

B. Foreign Policy Problems England and France went to war with each other. The U.S. traded with both countries and still wanted to keep making money. Proclamation of Neutrality (1793): President George Washington said the U.S. would not support one side or the other in the war. Signed treaties with England and Spain while in office to keep the US out of wars.
