Amount of $$$$ owed by the nation’s gov’t– the new nation faced serious financial problems – owed a lot of money! Hamilton was in charge of the economic policies Hamilton’s goal  to improve the gov’t financial situation *Why did the new nation owe so much money?

Hamilton Jefferson It will help build a strong national economy It will only benefit the wealthy Hamilton argued that Congress still had the power to create a bank (even if it wasn’t stated in the Constitution It is unconstitutional  creation of a national bank was not in the Constitution *Hamilton eventually won the argument when Washington agreed and created a National Bank
