R2 Things To Do

In a previous presentation we reviewed the things R2 needs to do prior to the start of the match. See Pre-Match Preparation on the SCOAonline website

The teams are now on the court and ready for you to check to see that they are in the correct serving order Leave the ball at the scorer table. Standing at the sideline off the court, check the receiving team’s lineup first using your personal line up card. Authorize the Libero to exchange onto the court if she wants and have the captain raise her hand to acknowledge her role to the R1. Move to the other side of the net and do the same for the serving team. Return to the table, retrieve the ball and roll it to the 1st server.

The teams are now on the court, you have checked to see that the correct players are on the court and in the proper rotation and have indicated to R1 who the team captains are you are ready to proceed with the match.

What is your next responsibility? The teams are now on the court, you have checked to see that the correct players are on the court and in the proper rotation and have indicated to R1 who the team captains are you are ready to proceed with the match. What is your next responsibility?

Your next responsibility is to check to see the receiving team is in the proper rotational order when the serve is contacted.

As the rally proceeds we have covered in a previous presentation what you are to do as R2 See SCOAonline website and R2 Transitioning

Assume the serving team wins the rally. What do you do next?

Assume the serving team wins the rally. What do you do next? Mimic the signals given by R1.

Move quickly to the receiving team side of the net. Good officials do this at the completion of the rally as it is a way of giving information to R1 about whom they believe to have won the rally and puts them ready to start the next rally.

Your responsibilities are the same no matter who wins the rally.

Likely the most important of these responsibilities is… Check the receiving team to see that they are in the proper rotation

Likely the most important of these responsibilities is… Check the receiving team to see that they are in the proper rotation Notice that you are not responsible for knowing who the next server is, how many timeouts have been taken and where the Libero is entering in and our of the match. That is the scorer’s & assistant scorer’s responsibility

Since the player you need to best keep track of is the setter, you need to know who the setter is, where she is (front or back row) and who the next 2 player are in rotational order.

Since the player you need to best keep track of is the setter, you need to know who the setter is, where she is (front or back row) and who the next 2 player are in rotational order. By the time you are very far into the match you should be able to identify at least 4 players around the setter and their rotational order.

You need to constantly keep track of the rotational orders of both teams. You need to be able to do this without constantly looking at your lineup card.

I know you may think you can’t do that I know you may think you can’t do that. I would suggest that it is because you don’t want to. You don’t want to try riding the bicycle without the training wheels ( lineup card) Work at it and you will be able to do it.

As you progress from relying on your lineup card to remembering what the lineups are, here are a few things to do..

R2’s - Do’s

R2’s - Do’s Do check the receiving team’s rotational order every serve.

R2’s - Do’s Do check the receiving team’s rotational order every serve. Learn to identify whether the setters are in the front or back rows.

R2’s - Do’s Do check the receiving team’s rotational order every serve. Learn to identify whether the setters are in the front or back rows. Learn to know from memory the rotational order of 3 (eventually 4) players that are around the setter. If you can get to 5 you have it made because the 6th player has to be in rotation.
